Quote of the Week

“When life gets you down, want to know what you’ve gotta do? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.”

~Dory, Finding Nemo~

I'm convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they're stones that don't matter. As long as you're breathing, it's never too late to do some good. Maya Angelou

FIRST DAY FUN

The first day of 5th grade finally happened! We had a weather delay and missed Open House and our scheduled first day, but the kids and teachers were ready to go today!

My class used the IPADs to explore their building today. They found some of the wonderful staff members that help take care of them during the week, fun items throughout the building, and important places. We are off the a great year!

Soil Trailer

Luke Westerman and Keila Sherman with the Greenwood County Conservation District visited the school on Monday. They brought a Soil Trailer and talked about how, "Healthy Soils Are Full of Life." The kids enjoyed listening to the presentation about taking care of our soil and ground water. They were also able to view many replicas of plants and animals that are found in Kansas soil. Students were asked to participate in a poster contest for the state. I have included information about the contest underneath the pictures below.

5th Grade Explorers

My class just finished up a Native Americans Unit in Social Studies and now we are starting Explorers. To get them excited about early explorers, they became explorers too! We went into the outdoor classroom and imagined that we were the first people there. They took notes in their Explorer Journals and drew sketches of what they saw. It was a perfect 75 degree February day! The kids found raccoon tracks, rabbit droppings, a crawdad, cattails, trees budding and much more. Please click on the picture below to watch a short video of their adventure!

January

In the month of January, 5th grade students were kept busy learning about their own state of KANSAS! They practiced with their teams and competed in a Kansas Quiz Bowl Tournament. Students also learned about quilting from Judy Dunn, antiques from Mrs. Hosack and traveled to the Greenwood County Historical Society Museum.

Happy Birthday Kansas!

A Little Note

Dear Parents,

The months of September and October have come and gone in quite a rush! I apologize for not keeping up with the blog as I was hurriedly trying to keep up with your students. Wow! The things they have learned in the past few months are literally out of this world! Just a month ago many of them believed that the moon glows and that the Sun is the biggest star in the universe. Now they know that the moon reflects the Sun and that our Sun is just an averaged sized star. The reason our Sun appears to be so large is because it is actually closer than the other stars.

Your student has ventured to Old Iron Days in Fredonia for a field trip, experienced Family Fun Night, and decorated downtown for Fall.We have had Halloween festivities and even had a funeral for dead words. They have been paid with the 5th grade money each week for performing the tasks that are expected of then and were then able to use that money to purchase items or coupons in the class store.

Before Thanksgiving a few of the exciting things your child will experience are dissecting an owl pellet and traveling to Wichita to the Symphony. They are also decorating programs for the Veteran's Day program that will take place on Friday, November 11th at 9:00am.

Thank you for all of your support with supplies, words of encouragement, and a great Halloween party.

I will be adding pictures to the blog showing some of the activities that I have mentioned above.

Sincerely,
Mrs.Burden
