Quote of the Week
“When life gets you down, want to know what you’ve gotta do? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.”
~Dory, Finding Nemo~
I'm convinced of this: Good done anywhere is good done everywhere. For a change, start by speaking to people rather than walking by them like they're stones that don't matter. As long as you're breathing, it's never too late to do some good. Maya Angelou

CSI: ROANOKE ISLAND
Did you know that a whole colony of around 115 people disappeared from Roanoke Island around 1590? My fifth grade students have been studying different scenarios of what could have happened to these colonists. Did they go to Croatoan Island, now known as Hatteras? Were they killed by the natives or even the Spanish? Ask your student what they think happened. They should have evidence to support their answer.

Valentine's Day Party
Friday, February 12th
students in 5th grade celebrated Valentine’s Day by playing games
and exchanging cards. They created and decorated their own boxes and brought
them to put their cards in. They also played a Sweet Synonyms Match game during the day and visited the class store. During the party the kids had cupcakes, drinks, treat bags, and played a game. Thank you to our parent volunteers! We had a great party!

Maniac Magee Dioramas and Presentations
My reading class finished reading, "Maniac Magee," a story about a boy who runs. He runs into a town that is segregated but he doesn't understand why. Maniac is fearless, curious, and loving and my students loved his character. They were asked to recreate a scene from the book by creating a diorama. They then presented it to the class. They were graded on accuracy of the scene, creativity and time spent, description of scene on a note card, and presentation.

KANSAS DAY CELEBRATION
The celebration of Kansas’s 155th
birthday did not go unnoticed by Marshall Elementary 5th grade
students. On Thursday, January 28th, the students traveled to the
Greenwood County Historical Museum in the morning and had guest speakers at the
school in the afternoon. The students were surprised at how much their local
museum has to offer and enjoyed the presentations by staff members. They are
looking forward to going back to the museum and exploring the exhibits again
with their families. Jeff Davidson brought along his guitar and songs of Kansas
to share with the students. They were clapping to the beat while learning about
the Pony Express, Kansas symbols, cattle drives and much more. Judy Dunn
presented a colorful exhibit of quilting and different ways and materials to
create a quilt. She used quilting patterns and related them to Kansas facts. At
the end of her presentation the students were able to create their own quilt
that Mrs. Dunn will complete and then donate to charity. Friday, Kansas Day, the
students spent their day competing in a Kansas Quiz Bowl. Students were given
their study questions the first week of January and have been practicing. The
Champions were: Charlee Bitler, Jericho Clark, Allisa Gulick, Isabela Lewis,
Kennedy Mead, and Mack Moore. They were undefeated! The fifth grade students
finished the day with snacks, a cake and Twinkies turned into a sunflower, provided
by parents. The celebration was a huge success!
